The long-awaited release of Braintree’s Enterprise is a big moment for the company. The platform has been in development since 2014, promising to be more efficient and scalable than old school payment processing solutions.
The “best credit card processing for low-volume business” is a service that allows businesses to accept cards without the hassle of managing their own payment processor.
Braintree is a PayPal-owned payment processor that specializes in online payments and offers in-person transaction capabilities via PayPal. Top-notch security with level 1 PCI compliance and compatibility with a variety of payment methods, including international payments and bank transfers, are just a few of the highlights.
Rates for credit card processing are inexpensive, and NGOs often get savings. Braintree is a suitable alternative for online companies searching for a Account with a merchant that allows them to accept international payments.

When Should You Use Braintree?
After PayPal, Stripe, and Amazon Pay, Braintree is one of the most prominent online payment services. Its security, convenience of use, vast range of payment options, and international capabilities make it an appealing alternative for almost any online retailer. However, since there are so many conflicting user opinions about customer service and frozen money, I suggest weighing all of your alternatives for receiving payments online before settling on Braintree.
Braintree is particularly well-suited to:
- Secure online payment processing: Braintree includes extensive tools to protect your company from fraud, chargebacks, and other dangers. It may also be used to store client information for Billing on a Regular Basis and subscriptions in a safe manner. It’s one of the safest payment processors on the market.
- Increasing online conversion rates: Accepting PayPal, Venmo, and digital wallet payments with Braintree as your Gateway for making payments. PayPal is the most trusted security mark among shoppers, and accepting PayPal payments helps lower cart abandonment rates at checkout.
- Braintree is our top rated payment processor for NGOs, with options to take ACH and bank transfer payments, recurring contributions, and reduced transaction costs for eligible organizations (we looked at Braintree and PayPal together in this guide).
- Braintree works with PayPal’s mobile readers and PayPal’s mobile payments software, which is one of the top mobile credit card processors available.
- Businesses searching for a Account with a merchant with free Integration with PayPal can check into the following options: PayPal is an excellent payment processor for small businesses, but it does not provide you your own Account with a merchant. If you have a Braintree Account with a merchant, you may use PayPal’s payment tools for free.
When Braintree Isn’t the Right Fit
- If you have a permanent brick-and-mortar shop, you may want to go with a solution designed specifically for storefront enterprises. Although Braintree’s mobility is one of its benefits, there are better solutions for retail credit card processing.
- Cheapest credit card processing: While Braintree’s ACH deposits are reasonable, there are alternative payment processors that provide lower credit card processing fees. See our list of the cheapest credit card processors for more information.
- Food-based enterprises: Food-based businesses like as sit-down and quick-service restaurants, as well as food trucks, are not covered by Braintree’s features. For a more industry-specific option, see our guide to the best payment processors for restaurants.
- High-risk enterprises: High-risk businesses are not supported by Braintree. If your firm fits this description, you’ll need to apply for a high-risk Account with a merchant.

Note that Braintree works with both Wells Fargo and Chase, which provide different terms of service. Product-specific agreements are for those accepting PayPal and other payment technology services.
There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to the basic payment service agreement:
- Braintree may terminate its gateway service after sending a written notice if your Account with a merchant is inactive for a period of 12 months or more.

Gateway for making payments
Braintree offers a seamless checkout process through its Gateway for making payments feature. You can choose between a simple drop-in user interface (UI) for an easy checkout page solution, or a custom UI for a more tailor-made user checkout experience. Both of these hosted payment options include secure data encryption and ensure that your payment processes remain PCI compliant.
Note that you can sign up for a Braintree Gateway for making payments and integrate it with different Account with a merchant service providers.

Integration with PayPal
Braintree, like Venmo, is owned by PayPal and therefore considered more of a major feature than just an ordinary integration. The difference is you can get your own Account with a merchant with Braintree but not with PayPal, and with this integration, you can link your PayPal Business account with your Braintree Account with a merchant. This allows you to start accepting PayPal and in-person payments through PayPal’s infrastructure at no additional cost. You only need to pay for PayPal’s processing fees.
Having a Integration with PayPal means Braintree merchants have access to omnichannel tools. You can provide your customers with the option to buy in-store with payment methods saved to an online profile or buy online with payment methods used in-store. You can even support in-store pick-ups, returns and exchanges.
Despite the latest Braintree improvements, the user guide still leads you through a PayPal Here connection, which may seem odd given PayPal’s deliberate redirection of its customers to PayPal Zettle for in-person purchases. Before setting up for an account, be sure to clarify this with Braintree’s account administrators.

Processing of International Payments
Braintree’s agreements with local banks in other countries provide global payments processing, allowing you to achieve the best transaction rates available. You may take payments in over 130 currencies and settle numerous transactions in different currencies. Every foreign payment you receive is immediately translated into US dollars and put into your bank account, with a 1% transaction charge.
Processing of ACH Payments
Users of Braintree provide their clients the option to pay securely through a direct link to their local bank account. It enables four ways of authenticating a bank account before collecting any money, reducing the chance of getting penalised for unsuccessful transactions. Batch processing is used to clear payments received, and it takes around five business days for your cash to be deposited into your account.
Note that there are fees associated with processing ACH payments as well as fines for rejected, returned, or disputed transactions. Also, not all Braintree Account with a merchant holders can accept ACH payments unless they meet the following conditions:
- Your company is based in the United States.
- Your transactions are local, and you take US dollars as payment.
- You signed up for a Account with a merchant with Braintree
- A chargeback program is not enabled on your Braintree account.
- You are using Braintree’s custom Gateway for making payments integration
Payments That Recur
Braintree’s Billing on a Regular Basis feature allows you to create custom pricing plans and set up discounts, add-ons, promotions and free trials for your customers. You can even set up rewards for long-term subscriptions.
For individuals who wish to join in automated payments, Braintree can securely store billing information as well as card or banking credentials after they sign up. When your consumers elect to upgrade or decrease their memberships, it may also calculate prorated prices.

Vault of Braintree
For customers who want to sign up for automatic payments, Braintree offers a secure card and bank information vault feature. Braintree also offers an account updater service. Every saved payment method in the vault is encrypted by Braintree’s Gateway for making payments and tokenized for PCI compliance.
The Vault of Braintree also comes with an account updater, but you will have to request the service as there is a separate fee for it. An update is requested when the card:
- Is it beyond its expiration date?
- Is it about to expire this month?
- Is enrolled in a Billing on a Regular Basis payment that’s due within two weeks
- Under particular refuse codes, authorisation has been denied.
- In the previous 30 days, has been rejected
- In the previous 30 days, there have been no successful transactions.
Reporting
Use Braintree’s powerful transaction search features or the open API to create your own bespoke reports. You may also get information on transactions, declines, and settlement batches through the Control Panel. If you need real-time alerts for particular events occurring in your gateway, Braintree may be configured with Webhooks that will keep track of these occurrences for you.
One thing to note about Braintree’s detailed transaction reports is that the availability of information depends on your Account with a merchant’s pricing model. If you have signed up for interchange plus pricing, data for each of your transactions become available five days after the proceeds are deposited in your account. If you have a flat rate or blended pricing model, data for each transaction is added to the report three calendar days after proceeds are sent to your bank account.
All credit and debit card transactions, as well as Venmo and digital wallet payments, will be included in Braintree’s transaction reports. Transactions made using PayPal are not included. (Image courtesy of Braintree)
Protection Against Fraud
Braintree offers basic and premium Protection Against Fraud tools. Basic Protection Against Fraud includes address verification, card verification, and risk threshold settings. These ensure that all fraudulent transactions identified through the verification tools are blocked from being processed.
On the other hand, premium Protection Against Fraud offers two types of security: Protection Against Fraud and Protection Against Fraud Advanced. Protection Against Fraud comes with a fixed set of security rules such as geolocation and device information, while Protection Against Fraud Advanced (available for an additional fee) includes the ability to customize security rules, review transactions, and send notifications.
Ease of Use in Braintree
For businesses that are currently using PayPal or are just starting started with online payments, the strong connection with PayPal makes it simple. It’s a platform that’s easy to use, reliable, and safe. However, businesses are at the mercy of PayPal’s unpredictability in freezing payments and accounts.
Integrations
Braintree has no shortage of other Integrations either. You can connect it to popular ecommerce platforms like Shift4Shop (formerly 3dcart), BigCommerce, and WooCommerce. Other Integrations include options for Billing on a Regular Basis, shopping carts, accounting, analytics, online forms, event ticketing, and enterprise-specific tools.
Customer Service
Braintree Customer Service is available over the phone, or you can submit a support ticket via an online form. You can also troubleshoot with its extensive support library or refer to its developer documentation. Most users report difficulty getting in touch with Braintree’s support team.
What Users Have to Say About Braintree
The overall ratings for Braintree are mediocre, with the majority of concerns centered on bad customer support. The open API, integrations, simplicity of use, and worldwide payment capacity are all popular aspects.
- Capterra: Braintree has a 4.1 out of 5 rating from over 35 users. It is straightforward to use, according to those who appreciate it, yet there have been several complaints concerning customer support.
- G2: Braintree is rated 3.5 out of 5 based on 80+ reviews. While merchants like that they can do business across international borders, they have negative comments about fraud prevention, unresponsive Customer Service, and inability to access funds.
- FinancesOnline: Braintree has a 4.5 out of 5 rating from 20 reviews, with a 95 percent customer satisfaction rating. Some others claim they had issues from beginning to end, and that they even had trouble cancelling their account. Others prefer Braintree’s cost and the variety of payment methods it accepts.
While reading reviews, I found the following patterns:
Conclusion
Overall, Braintree is easy enough to set up and use for mobile and online payments. If you’re a PayPal Business user looking for a Account with a merchant, Braintree may be the most natural next step to scaling your operations. However, while features and functionality have improved along with better pricing, it’s still not the best long-term solution. Limited features and functionality, lack of Customer Service, and commonly frozen accounts and funds mean other payment processors may be better suited for the long run.
