Authorize.net offers two different options. It may be used as a standalone payment gateway, allowing you to pick your own merchant service, or it can be used as an all-in-one solution, providing payment processing at a fixed fee. There is a monthly cost for both. It’s one of the most widely used payment gateways, integrating with merchant services and point-of-sale systems to facilitate payment processing.
Authorize.net has a 4.75 out of 5 ratings based on our criteria. It received high marks in every category except price, where it was penalized for its monthly costs. There were a few complaints of held money, which was typical of all the software we looked at, however, such difficulties might have been caused by the merchant service rather than Authorize.net in certain circumstances.
Pricing
Authorize.net has two options to choose from. Its gateway plan increases the merchant service charge by 10 cents per transaction. The all-in-one solution comes with a merchant account and has a flat rate of 2.9 percent + 30 cents per transaction. Whether you type in, swipe/chip/dip, or invoice, most suppliers have different fees. For example, Square charges 2.6 percent plus ten cents for in-person purchases and 3.5 percent plus fifteen cents for keyed-in and online transactions.
You pay $25 every month, regardless of the plan. The majority of the gateways in our list are free to use on a monthly basis. PaymentCloud provides, but only for high-risk businesses (thus the higher rates), while Chase’s monthly cost stems from the fact that you must have a business account.
There are no chargeback costs with Authorize.net; but, if you link it to a different merchant account, that account will very certainly have chargeback fees.
Your POS hardware will almost certainly come from a third party, however, Authorize.net does offer a credit card reader that works with its mobile app. This will set you back $65, which is about average for a chip and tap reader.

Stripe is a fantastic payment processor for organizations of all sizes, from startups to Fortune 500 companies. Its extensive integrations make it an excellent alternative for processing online, international, and B2B payments. However, due to its programmability, it made our list. Stripe’s API and SDK capabilities are among the finest on the market, making it an excellent option for companies looking to integrate Stripe payments into their software or mobile apps.
Stripe received a 4.54 out of 5 ratings. In our price area, it received a perfect score, as well as good marks for simplicity of use and value. (Bearing in mind the technical nature of programming APIs, this is a good rule of thumb.) It, like Square, was chastised for stories of unclaimed payments and for refusing to cooperate with high-risk companies. - Stripe offers a free invoicing feature that allows you to send up to 25 payment requests each month. It does, however, make creating a billing system for one-time or regular payments simple. Flat prices, multiple pricing, use charges (such as for power), and other options are available. It connects to websites, mobile applications, and customer relationship management (CRM) systems.
- Stripe has over 660 partners and interfaces across accounting and finance, marketing and sales, operations, payments, and eCommerce, and was built to be readily integrated. It also includes great SDK and API options for building your own integrations. Stripe handles around 250 million API calls every day.
- International sales: While 2Checkout is our favorite on this list for international sales, Stripe isn’t far behind. Stripe allows you to take payments in over 135 different currencies. It does, however, charge a fee for processing foreign credit cards in person.
Why Stripe Isn’t Always the Best Option
- Stripe is a high-tech platform designed for programming and unique use cases. Although it has certain POS capabilities, the other payment gateways on our list are easier.
- Stripe, like PaymentCloud, does not provide a mobile POS app that allows you to take payments from your smartphone. It does include third-party applications, such as Stripe Payments by FacilePay, which has a 4.5-star rating but costs a transaction fee. Square is the ideal option if you wish to do transactions using your smartphone or tablet.

This user-friendly system makes our top POS system for small companies, restaurant POS, best credit card readers, best salon POS, and other lists. It’s also a top-ranked merchant service, so it’s no surprise that it’s a top payment gateway. It may be used on a mobile device, a desktop computer, a tablet computer, or a point-of-sale system.
Square was ranked lower on this list because of many reports of frozen payments and terminated accounts. In fact, of all the goods on our list, it earns the lowest score in the support area. However, it made up for this shortcoming by ranking very well in terms of pricing, features, and overall customer happiness. Overall, it received a 4.53 out of 5 ratings.
Pricing
Square’s transaction fees range from 2.6 percent +10 cents to 3.5 percent +15 cents. Because there are no extra or add-on gateway costs, they are among the cheapest on our list. Authorize.net, on the other hand, may provide interchange-plus via a merchant account (which can be less expensive, especially for established businesses with a significant transaction volume), and Chase offers interchange-plus at the same rates as Square. Square gives savings to companies that handle more than $250,000 in credit cards each year.
Not only does Square not charge monthly fees, but it also offers Free point-of-sale software and a virtual terminal. Many other systems on our list charge for these or rely on a third-party application, which you’ll pay for. In addition, Square waives chargeback fees up to $250 a month.
Square may be used on an iPad or POS systems can be purchased for $299. Card readers start at $49, however, a magstripe reader is still available for free. Although most of the gateways on our list provide greater selection, these are among the cheapest we identified.

- You can use it in-store or on the road thanks to its simplicity of use and excellent mobile app. It includes a virtual terminal for taking phone orders, a free website/online shop, and freelancer and B2B invoicing. Why Square Isn’t Always the Best Option

Because of its worldwide reach, 2Checkout entered our list of payment gateways. With over 120 eCommerce connections, it’s also quite easy to use. What makes it particularly useful for international sales is that it may serve as the merchant of record, handling not just payment processing but also sales tax administration and compliance.
In August 2020, Verifone bought 2Checkout. According to the 2Checkout website, the company will continue to offer services while also embracing Verifone capabilities.
In our review of 2Checkout, we awarded it a score of 4.46 out of 5. It received full marks for price and performed well in terms of support and dependability. Its score was harmed by the absence of a mobile app, although it is eCommerce-focused and works with integrations. It was also penalized for its chargeback fee and for refusing to interact with high-risk companies.

As such, it’s a great choice for businesses just starting out that also need checking, a business credit card, and more. It serves businesses in the US, Canada, and Europe, but can handle international sales and has a large number of integrations and partnerships.
Chase received a 4.36 out of 5 ratings. It received high marks for value and features, but it received low marks for the monthly subscription (which is for the checking account) and, in particular, for the three-day or longer approval procedure. Others on our list are speedier, however, Amazon and PaymentCloud might take weeks to approve.
